We are thrilled to announce Ferd Scheepers (ING) as our second keynote speaker for the 2017 edition of Flink Forward Berlin! Ferd is the global Chief Information Architect of ING. Ferd has been driving ING’s journey to becoming a data driven company for the last 4 years. He has published on Data Lakes, and is a frequent speaker on both major vendor conferences, and on open source summits. Currently he is championing the Apache Atlas open metadata initiative.
We proudly present our first keynote speaker for Flink Forward Berlin 2017: Xiaowei Jiang, Senior Director at Alibaba. He leads the StreamCompute Platform for AliCloud. The platform provides the real time data processing both internally and externally. Previously, he worked as Tech Lead at Facebook and Principal Engineer at Microsoft SQL Server.
Xiaowei will present the keynote “Bring Flink to Large Scale Production”. Alibaba operates the world’s largest e-commerce platform. The massive scale and strict latency requirements present unique challenges for real time data infrastructure. Xiaowei will share their scenarios and how they use Flink at Alibaba. In addition, he will talk about various improvements they made to bring Flink into large scale production.
The Flink Forward team is calling for volunteers! Join us, and you will help create an enjoyable Flink Forward experience for attendees, speakers, sponsors and fellow volunteers.
This is a great opportunity to gain insights into the organization of a tech conference and to also get in touch with the open source stream processing community. About 20 volunteers will be responsible for various conference duties such as accreditation and stage management.

Flink Forward is the premier conference for the community around Apache Flink, stream processing, and streaming data applications powered by data Artisans.
Featuring talks and keynotes from the largest brands using streaming technology to transform industries, Flink Forward is the perfect opportunity to increase brand awareness, showcase your products, and establish your commitment to the Flink ecosystem among a highly skilled technical audience holding decision-making positions in their organizations.
Apache Flink contributors, users, and enthusiasts are highly skilled software developers, architects, executives, and graduate students at the forefront of the data streaming revolution. With over 300 attendees at the previous Berlin edition in 2016, and more than 2,300 views of the online videos, Flink Forward is the best opportunity to be visible for sponsors within the streaming data and Apache Flink. The conference is also accompanied by one day of Flink hands-on training, and the Flink Fest to connect with the thriving community in order to push Apache Flink to the next level.

Flink Forward kicks off with one day of training sessions on September 11. Our one day trainings are each led by members of the data Artisans team. A higher quality training session is hard to find! You’ll take part in a hands-on learning session led by true experts.
Choosing a track – If you are new to Flink, come to the standard training. If you have a Flink app in production, come to the advanced training. In between those extremes, see the descriptions below.
Standard training – An in-depth introduction to stream processing with Apache Flink. Highlights: event time processing and watermarks, windowing, state management, and fault tolerance.
Advanced training – This session assumes you already know the basics. The emphasis is on more advanced (and lower-level) parts of the API, such as using ProcessFunction for sorting and joins, working with Triggers and Evictors, and operational topics, including metrics, monitoring, and tuning.
Both training tracks are very much hands-on; you’ll need a laptop and a knowledge of Java and/or Scala. The Flink trainings require preparations which involve downloading software binaries, Maven dependencies, and test data. Because we all know how reliable and well-performing conference WiFi tends to be, we kindly ask you to do the setup for the training in advance. We will send you detailed instructions before the event.
